Achievement and SLP

Measure of Student Achievement and Success

Many different assessment and evaluation strategies are used by staff, including regular testing, class participation, class work, individual and group work, guided groups, self and peer-evaluation as well as student-led conferences and portfolios. Pupil and program assessment and evaluation are ongoing as teachers strive to maximize student achievement. Grades 3 and 6 students participate in the EQAO tests administered to all grade 3 and 6 students across Ontario.

Throughout the year, BCES staff strive to foster a positive sense of self and community in each of our students. On a daily basis staff recognize student achievements (formally and informally) in both academic and non-academic areas in the primary, junior and intermediate divisions. Our many sports activities result in numerous Regional and Board awards. Upon completion of grade 6, there are several awards presented to students who are progressing to grade 7. These include the Principal’s Award, the Bridlewood Community Association President Award, the Wendell Styles Award, and class academic and citizenship awards.

School Learning Plans and Initiatives

School Learning Plans allow staff to concentrate their focus on one particular area of the curriculum. We engage in professional discussions and work collaboratively to extend our understanding of current research and practice in the focus area. Specific strategies are developed to improve students’ achievements. For 2019-2020  our School Learning Plan focus is on improvement in Mathematics. More specifically, we are focusing on helping students improve their ability to communicate their mathematical thinking as they select and apply appropriate strategies..

We use time on Professional Activity Days and during staff meetings to review student data, student work and a variety of demographic factors to plan our instructional practices and any resources to be purchased to best meet the needs of our students.
